The U.S. troll fishery for albacore has operated along the West coast of North America since the early ’s. The National Marine Fisheries Service began collecting data from the fishery in Each year the SWFSC publishes a summary of the fishery and it’s associated statistics in an administrative report. Ranging from central Baja California and all the way up the U.S. west coast well into British Columbia waters, ranging from 10 to over miles from shore, the annual run of the speedy, white-meat tuna known as "albacore" or "longfins" is the most electrifying event of the saltwater fishing season. In the s and '70s, the harbors along the West Coast were thriving communities of small-boat fishermen — nearly three times the current number — fishing for albacore tuna. The abundance of albacore hasn't diminished; in fact, numbers are now near the long-term abundance level. For decades, the San Diego Bay -sport-fishing passenger fleet depended on the annual albacore run for its very livelihood. Fishing waters 30 to 90 miles from Point Loma, anglers and albacore filled the boats that ran “turnaround” schedules virtually all summer out of landings such as Fisherman’s and H&M. I traveled to Ilwaco to rendezvous with these fish during the first leg of the Oregon Tuna Classic, an annual two-tournament series — one out of Ilwaco, on the Washington side of the Columbia, and the second out of Garibaldi, a three-hour drive from Portland, I met up with the Bad to the Bone fishing team, headed by Del Stephens, a year albacore veteran and acknowledged.
